At a Special General Meeting of the association held on the 27th June 2014, FAA members agreed to alter the associations Rules. The new Rules allow applicants for membership to carry out a self-assessment of their compliance to Voluntary Code of Practice for Firewood Suppliers (The Code). Prior to this change, Code compliance was determined during a site visit carried out by an authorised FAA assessor which cost applicants $660. This up-front cost was a disincentive to some businesses who were interested in becoming a member of the association but were unsure whether membership would be beneficial to their business. Under the new Rules, provided that the applicant’s self-assessment is able to satisfactorily demonstrate that their business complies with The Code, applicants will not have to pay anything until they achieve full membership status.
Another change to the Rules makes it mandatory for all full members to carry out an annual self-assessment of compliance to The Code. This new membership requirement builds on the credibility of association members as reputable suppliers of good quality sustainable firewood and provides confidence that all members are adhering to The Code.
